Farms

Strong Traditions & New Diversity
The North Fork has a rich agricultural history that dates back to New England colonists in 1640. Though potatoes dominated for many years, vegetables, vineyards, orchards, berries, dairy and livestock can all be found today. Another shift has been toward sustainable and organic practices.

One thing that has never changed: all of our farms are small, family operations.

Numerous farmstands offer visitors a variety of local, healthy food. Besides produce, many offer meat, dairy, cheese, specialty items, baked goods and hand crafted gifts. At some farms people can pick fruit, such as apples, berries and pumpkins, or select flowers, plants, trees—even Christmas trees. A few farms provide a full range of play for kids, with bouncy houses, corn mazes and pony rides.

Our farming isn’t limited to land; we also have a deep and rich aquaculture tradition. When you visit, be sure to try our oysters, scallops, clams and fish. Even in the dead of winter a few farmstands remain open and you can always find farmers every weekend at the Riverhead Farmers Market, which is open Fall through Spring.

East End Mashroom Company

Jane Maguire and John Quigley are the masterminds behind the company with one word that is sure to make you smile – shrooms.

The East End Mushroom Company was founded in October 2012 with a mission of growing mushrooms, specifically the Shiitake, Maitake, and Oyster varieties, and offering them to everyone from famed local chefs to enthusiastic home cooks. Grown in a state of the art facility, mushrooms are picked daily to ensure incomparable freshness. Jane and John can be found at the farm weekly, and at the various farmers markets on the North Fork. Inspired by the local food scene, they saw a need for a farm that hadn’t previously existed on the East End. Surrounded by boundless agriculture, the couple decided to start growing mushrooms and open their own farm. Since opening, Jane and John have seen much success in distributing to restaurants across New York, as well as their retail store at the Cutchogue farm. Stop in to talk about mushrooms, recipes, and taste the goodness of these shrooms for yourself.

Schmitt's Farmstand on Sound

We are a fourth generation farm family on the Eastern End of Long Island. Our family has been farming on Long Island for over 150 years originating in Fosters Meadow (now Rosedale). We moved further east on the island to Farmingdale and then out to Riverhead in the 70’s where we have been farming ever since.

We operate a 165-acre wholesale vegetable farm producing lettuce, spinach, cabbage, super sweet corn, beets and herbs. We provide to local farm stands as well as supermarkets and New York City markets.

In the late 90’s we ventured into the cut flower business, creating beautiful, fresh bouquets daily. In 2003 we expanded into the retail business, opening a small roadside stand that has now developed into Schmitt’s Farm Stand On Sound.

We have always been dedicated to bringing you the best and freshest vegetables and flowers possible! Come visit us.
