Farms

Strong Traditions & New Diversity
The North Fork has a rich agricultural history that dates back to New England colonists in 1640. Though potatoes dominated for many years, vegetables, vineyards, orchards, berries, dairy and livestock can all be found today. Another shift has been toward sustainable and organic practices.

One thing that has never changed: all of our farms are small, family operations.

Numerous farmstands offer visitors a variety of local, healthy food. Besides produce, many offer meat, dairy, cheese, specialty items, baked goods and hand crafted gifts. At some farms people can pick fruit, such as apples, berries and pumpkins, or select flowers, plants, trees—even Christmas trees. A few farms provide a full range of play for kids, with bouncy houses, corn mazes and pony rides.

Our farming isn’t limited to land; we also have a deep and rich aquaculture tradition. When you visit, be sure to try our oysters, scallops, clams and fish. Even in the dead of winter a few farmstands remain open and you can always find farmers every weekend at the Riverhead Farmers Market, which is open Fall through Spring.

Schmitt's Farmstand on Sound

We are a fourth generation farm family on the Eastern End of Long Island. Our family has been farming on Long Island for over 150 years originating in Fosters Meadow (now Rosedale). We moved further east on the island to Farmingdale and then out to Riverhead in the 70’s where we have been farming ever since.

We operate a 165-acre wholesale vegetable farm producing lettuce, spinach, cabbage, super sweet corn, beets and herbs. We provide to local farm stands as well as supermarkets and New York City markets.

In the late 90’s we ventured into the cut flower business, creating beautiful, fresh bouquets daily. In 2003 we expanded into the retail business, opening a small roadside stand that has now developed into Schmitt’s Farm Stand On Sound.

We have always been dedicated to bringing you the best and freshest vegetables and flowers possible! Come visit us.

Wickham's fruit is grown on some of the oldest continually cultivated land in the country, much of the farm dating from 1661. Wickham's Fruit Farm is an historic, bicentennial farm, beautiful to behold against the sparkling waters of Peconic Bay.

It is one of the largest farms on the North Fork, approximately 300 acres, of which 200 acres are in fruit, all of which is retailed at the farm. The emphasis is on fruit of the highest quality, and all fruit sold is guaranteed.
